Wonder if anyone has any info about the '78 Savanna Convertibles? I've been told (by the previous owner) that Mazda imported 25 of them and made them into convertibles as a marketing thing for RX7s.
The plate on mine says the top was chopped off in '84. I have a letter from Phil's Rotary (dated '98) saying that this is one of 25 in Australia, and I have the original compliance report for the convertible modification, which says it's a '78 model. I'm guessing they changed over the side mirrors and rear lights to S2/3 version when they did the convertible mod, because it looks more like a S2/3 than a Savanna/S1.
i did a lot of work many years ago sorting out "windchilled and topless" back to street and sorting the E6H haltech for its then new Perth owner ( not builder )
this was a very documented and engineered and unique vehicle
( if you include the Porsche lights and body kit )
all with a veritable wad of compliance and mod permits
BUT it was NOT one of the original topless rx7 batches,, i doubt yours is too
( sounds to me that phils is pulling yet another swifty )
this one was engineered on the basis that its been done and imported before
and had substantial under-body and rear firewall modifications ( 626 coupe boot rear )
- actually added quite a bit of weight to the car,, much heavier than the standard coupe
for a while there was another ( copy ) in WA,,it went through a few panel and rotor shops hands but ultimately didnt get registered
last i knew of it custom car craft rockingham where badgering windchilleds owner for access to the mod permits
( to try and pull one over the WA scrutineers )

this thing had all the fruit,, including 35 spline 9 inch and bombed jatco and ran an 11.07, despite its weight
