FD gearbox into a 323 without modifying tunnel?

#1 Post by rascalian » Wed Feb 06, 2019 9:16 pm

Hey,

Currently running an mx5 gbox in my 323, I want to upgrade, FC ones are hard to come by so I would like to use the FC bellhousing I have with an adaptor and fit it to a FD gbox, will the bigger FD box fit in the transmission tunnel without having to cut it up?

Who has done this?

Assuming this would be the exact same question for 808/rx3s?

Cheers

There is a thread called "all you need to know about mazda Gearboxes" I am sure that covers the FD box. I know these bits

1/The extension housing is not remote, so the gearstick will be in the backseat somewhere.

2/I am not 100% sure, but I think the input shaft is a different size/length, so a bell housing may not fit.

It may be a tight as fk fit unless your 323 was originally Auto, as these have a bigger tunnel.

Anyway, do a search for that thread mentioned above and have a look. it is pretty detailed.

Cheers Kypreo,

I have been through that thread many times over the years and it’s always been awesome.

I understand all the usual mods to make the gbox physically work in my application but can’t find any info on whether the tunnel with have space for the bigger box without cutting it.

Mine was manual from factory.

Keen to hear from someone that has tried this and failed (why?) or succeeded (any minor mods needed?)

Cheers!

Best you just do it and if it doesnt fit and you dont want to cut tunnel sell off the bits, it takes longer than an internet post but you get what you pay for sometimes...

I contacted a mate who has done (was a while ago) and from his foggy memory, they had to "thump" the tunnel in certain spots to get it in. That was for a S4 turbo box though.

Thanks for that OMP,

I’ve heard the FD ones are a bit bigger still so not looking too good based off that!
