I was in no way having a go at your post, actually, now on the topic, quiet the opposite.
100% agree with what you said, and good on you for taking the time to put it out there.
Even if it only aids in one person being able to gain some insight, it's wise words worth saying indeed.
Apologies for any offence taken.
No offence taken mate, I get your frustration. This topic from start to finish is just sad... No tags/ ID plate should be up forsale, no $1000 808 should have a 10-12k price tag just coz of some plates

Indeed, we get plenty of the same issues on mini forums regarding cooper s. The law is cracking down big time on rebirths and fakes, sell a dodgy car make sure you have a decent lawyer. A dude was done recently for dodgy Gt falcon numbers.

Everyone has made such good posts on this thread , very good
And the car theft is a good point-

But if the law said it was ok to put a firewall number on an 808, which meant it was an rx3- I'd much rather that
a new rx3 was on the road.

Rather than bin the tags

Same with gtho and whatever

Horrible shame to loose cars in time.

Heaps of rx3 worthy 808's out there.

I don't really give a fuck if u put your rusty old rx3 tags on YOUR 808 and call it an rx3...the point is where do you think all the stolen cars have gone over the years?? Ever noticed how many full drag cars don't have numbers anymore? Its so easy to number job a stolen rx, I'd hate to think how many members on here are driving someone else's car...

The 808 -> RX-3 stuff doesn't really concern me much. It's the stealing cars and using ebay tags to 'rebirth' them that gives me the shits. :!:

For that reason alone, say NO to tags

This is a very interesting topic indeed, I have here 1 x 10a rx3 sedan, 1x 12a rx3 sedan & also a R100 I'd tag, these are all off cars I've bought 20 years ago, all rolled over genuine cars.. Raided all the good parts & sold off, none are stolen cars, is it better to reuse them one day or never again..

If your original RX's are crashed THEY ARE GONE!
No need to polish a turd, because one day your gonna sell that polished turd, and I bet "polished turd" appears nowhere in the add!

So many heart breaks have happened just like that.

Can you explain how it's a heart break, people restore genuine rx3s from 95% 808 parts and repro stuff, as above, when is the line crossed that it is no longer an rx3, everything 808 except rails. Does that make make it an rx3 still.
Isn't it better to restore a better bodied 808 over a rusted out rx3, and convert the 808 to an rx3, if the rx3's going to the scrapyard anyway why not take the plates and use them.

I'm against cars being stolen and rebadged but if you had a rolled rx3 and an 808 that needed restoring, tell me you wouldn't build the 808 up as an rx3 plates and all

they sold. $861 or something.

anyways...

an 808 is always an 808, no matter how much glitter goes on top of that polish.

likewise an Rx3 is always an Rx3.. no glitter required to make it desirable and collectible.

we all understand where fraud and misrepresentation arises in selling an 808 as an Rx3. no discussion required.

the discussion seems to lie in the difference between original (untouched), restored and modified, and a bunch of other nuanced categories.

Wow, scarey.
Be interesting to know if it's legit, and actually gets paid for.
No one is spending that just to throw it over the bar.

Other than being highly illegal...
Theres a reason Mazda spare parts sold every and any part piece panel, but no new tags/chassis numbers.
I can understand everything being said in here, but personally, i believe if you strip an RX3 down to nothing, not a nut bolt or screw attatched anywhere, even with rear quaters off, rear beaver off, and front clip/engine bay off, sills, outer pillars, etc, thats your RX3, and what is determined as being represented solely to those numbers.
Replace rest with parts from 10 different 808's, dont matter.
Sure, make repairs or replace sections on that very bare shell/chassis, still the same car with it's id.
But do exactly same as above with an 808, and weld in the firewall with RX3 id and tags, RX3 boot floor beaver floor pans mounts and members etc, it's still the 808 that was represented by it's own id, but been dodged.

It's a "" chassis "" number, which is the identification for the one and only chassis it came with.
Probably opening myself up to be flamed, but just a personal opinion, all be it harder to explain what i mean than i thought  But it's written now, so, meh.

Im actually very surprised at lots of comments, would have thought it would be taboo all round.

If i was to start a thread saying i have a rough genuine RX3 sedan in the shed that i will not be doing anything with, and have just purchased a very tidy 808 sedan that i will be Rotorising, with RX3 12a front etc, and i am going to scrap the RX3, replace the 808 firewall and tags with the genuine RX3 ones, so i can tell everyone it's a genuine RX3, even when i know it's not, then illegally sell it and rip someone off, cause im not going to tell them it IS an 808, i would have thought i'd be copping it hard from every post and laughed off AusRotary, not praised for saving another RX3 !!!

The heartbreak rises out of the price difference between the 2 models.
If you are sold an "original RX3" for the RX3 price to only be told by someone in the know down the track that it is a re-birthed 808, would you not be heartbroken?
Most guys will not change every aspect from 808 to RX3 when doing a re-birth, and there are guys on here that can tell the difference by heaps of different ways.
Just leaves the opening for dishonest/rip off cunts.
