that's what I thought initially but check out the FC crossmember. Unless it was modified to take the Y-shaped gearbox mount.

The crossmember has little bearing on what the gearbox actually is.

Looking at the picture, I can see that it has a regular old flat type gearbox mount on the extension housing so whatever crossmember is sitting under it is irrelevant.

I was also under the impression that the later smooth case gearboxes had a bunch of ribbing on the bell and extension housing, but have had little to do with them.

I believe it will bolt up, however the input shaft on your gearbox will be too short. Then you'd still need a push/pull conversion in order to use a conventional clutch.

You're really better off just finding the correct bellhousing.

Hi Guys

Sorry to dig up an old thread. But i have a injected 12A BP Datsun 1600. On the engineering papers it says i have a 85 rx7 gear box.... to which i have blown.

I have found a S6 box that i want to buy, but how hard is it to bolt up to a 12A. Also assuming it is a S3 box , by the year, would the shifter location be the same in a S3 and S6 box?

Thanks for your help with my noob questions.

I believe your new box would require shortening to pop up in the same hole , thats if your previous gearbox was rx7 s1

I can't speak to the shifter location on a Datsun, but the shifter position is different between s3 and s6 gearboxes. The s3 shifter extension housing is shorter. I assume you will need to modify the s6 gearbox to make it all work, which might be easiest to do by re-using your existing shifter extension from your current gearbox.

The trickiest bit is that you will need to match up the bellhousing to you suit your current configuration. S6 gearboxes uses a pull type clutch, different clutch size and different input shaft spline from a s3 gearbox, so you'll need a different clutch friction plate at a minimum and possibly a different flywheel. You'll then need to either convert the bellhousing to push type clutch using a s5 bellhousing or modify your clutch system to suit (assuming a pull type clutch will clear in your engine bay/trans tunnel).

Then you will need to modify your tailshaft and fabricate a custom gearbox crossmember.

Hi mate, can i suggest you look into fitting an MX5 gearset into your existing S3 housing they are stronger with better synchros, the s3 box is a lot lighter than an S6, its not straight forward as you need to shorten the front input shaft, i blew my S3 turbo box with 150rwhp now that it has 195rwhp it has survived at least 15 track days over the last 3 years good close ratios and shift much better than the larger turbo boxs
if you are pushing more HP ignore this post !

Thanks for the replies guys.

Ive gone a TOTALLY different route with this gearbox drama.

I have bitten the bullet and bought a R154 Toyota box.... well technically it’s an AR5 out of a Colorado, but it’s the newer variation of the R154.

So my question is now.... amoungst a heap more to follow, but if i buy a Plazmaman adapter kit on my bellhousing and the kit is designed for a S4/5 housing. What will that do?? Will it be tilted off to one side?

Or i buy the more expensive ( double the price😳) Pac adapter kit to suit my smaller housing and thus should sit flush.

Been told the plazie is better quality but is only for the 4/5 housing. Where as the Pac is designed for the smaller housing but double the price.

Pic of my box to make sure im not talking out my a$$. 😂😂

Hello all

I have a mazda 1500 column shift,

( bottom pictured is earlier model maybe 68/69? As it had a coarse spline with less teeth than my gearbox.. i know because ive tried to use this one as a replacement..)

Upper 2 photos i believe to be 10a RX3 as ive read here only the 10a r100s were top starters.

I want to use the rx3 bellhousing on my piston 1500 box as its column shift and i want that column shift og bench seat rotor action! :D

Will this work? Current motor im looking at has s5 irons..

What clutch setup and starter will i require?

Has anyone done a column shift rotor before?

Please help.

Scotty.
